The Broadway musical, written by the lauded playwright Anthony McCarten, was directed by Robert Gaudio and the award-winning Ken Davenport. With help from more than 6 decades of Diamond’s music, the team produced a “musical collage” with showtunes that take on "lives of their own”, as McCarten said during an interview with The Boston Globe.
This magical 2 hour 15 minute adventure comprises two acts. The first act ends with the beloved number Sweet Caroline, followed by a 15 min intermission. Use this time to grab refreshments, rejoin the show for one more hour of beautiful songs and engaging performances.
Many long-time lovers of Neil Diamond still remember when his 1976 album, A Beautiful Noise, was first released. They will never forget seeing the musical of the same name LIVE as it came to Des Moines. The exciting performance delighted audiences from the very beginning with a mesmerizing Broadway show and memorable songs.
The musical soon ended up on NYC Broadway, running from late 2022 into early 2024 at the Broadhurst Theatre. Talents like Will Swenson (playing Neil Diamond), Mark Jacoby (present-day Diamond), and Linda Powell (The Doctor) all delivered fantastic performances from the Boston production.
The musical swiftly spread its reach. With a fresh new cast, including the American Idol winner, Nick Fradiani, (playing Neil Diamond).
The tale follows the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, starting in the present day with Westenberg sitting in a therapist’s office. Neil Diamond explains how he can no longer sing like he used to while the doctor helps him cope with that realization throughout A Beautiful Noise.
The play goes all the way back to Diamond's Brooklyn childhood, showing his introduction to music and all the good and bad times since then, including his journey to stardom and fight with depression. But, what die-hard fans anticipate most is reliving Diamond’s catalog of hits in the Neil Diamond Musical.
While original stage play was nominated for Outstanding Production of a Musical and Outstanding New Broadway Musical, the cast took home the gold. Hoggett, Hurder, and LeProtto won Outstanding Ensemble in a Broadway Show by Chita Rivera Awards for their dance routines. Other award nominations include the Drama Desk Award and Drama League Awards.
