& Juliet – Musical at Des Moines Civic Center

& Juliet, one of the decade’s favorite musicals is arriving in Des Moines Civic Center, Des Moines in the coming May on Saturday 10th May 2025. Taking inspiration from very powerful source material, Des Moines Civic Center tackles the pressure of having the live staging of the Shakespeare's well-known fictional tragedy. William Shakespeare's love story has ultimately been regarded as one of the most despairing plays across multiple generations, with the central characters' passionate love for each other ending up in their choice to commit suicide. Using Shakespeare and his wife as characters in the new musical itself however, West End's modern show, & Juliet, tweaks the previous story by allowing Juliet to change her own fate in the death of her true love and focusing on her own coming-of-age story. Choosing to find new experiences with Juliet's equally-determined companions, the characters are introduced to a bigger world beyond what Juliet and her friends were accustomed to once they move to Paris, France.

Given that 400 years have passed since Romeo and Juliet, '& Juliet' also applies modernized execution that appeals to a younger audience. To deliver its message to its viewers, the play showcases a slew of numbers from pop music industry's top hitmaker, Max Martin. The Swedish producer previously had a goal of creating a musical around all his songs over his career, which prompted the musical being produced and subsequently debuting in 2019. Martin was very liberal in the usage of his songs to the production, stating that he “wished for '& Juliet' to have its own unique identity, and to let audiences feel that even if his songs are performed differently, the audience should discover their love for his hits again.” '& Juliet' ended up including songs from global performers including Jessie J, Britney Spears, P!nk, and The Backstreet Boys, among others. Because of this, the play was one of the first to gather a new audience to Broadway.
